Breathing Easier with Natural Supplements

September 2, 2017

By Christine Cheng, R.Ph. and Frederick Cheng, R.Ph.

Breathing is such an automatic function that we often do not realize how important our respiratory systems are until they are affected by something like the smoke that drifted into the Lower Mainland from the wildfires in the Interior of B.C. Thankfully, our respiratory tracts are lined with tiny hairs called cilia from the nose right down to the smallest bronchioles to help sweep debris and particulates out of the body. When the cilia are not able to work as well as they should (e.g., are overwhelmed), particulates can cause irritation to the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract. To help things along, there are some supplements that can support the lungs’ natural detoxification and respiratory function.

For those who work outdoors and are exposed to air pollutants on a regular basis (and who may have endured the greatest exposure to the smoky haze), LUNG FLUSH® by OMEGA ALPHA is a herbal formula based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties specifically targeted to the lungs. For example, Japanese Honeysuckle Flower is included for its antioxidant properties.  In TCM, it is typically used  to support lung health and for its detoxification properties. Chrysanthemum flower is also included in this formula for its ability to soothe the respiratory mucous membranes. Because Lung Flush® is considered a detoxification formula, it is intended for short-term use (e.g., 3-4 weeks) and can be repeated sporadically.

RESPRIT™ is another herbal formula based on TCM theory. Some highlights of this formula include Thunberg Fritillary Bulb to help expel mucous, relieve cough, and reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract. Eucalyptus leaf and Milkwort Rot help to expel mucus. This formula also includes Chrystanthemum flower and Japanese Honeysuckle Flower. Resprit™ can be used on a regular basis by those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

N-ACETYL CYSTEINE (NAC) is the acetylated form of the amino acid cysteine that is well-known for being the antidote for acetaminophen poisoning. However, it also has anti-oxidant properties through its ability to readily crosses the cell membrane where it helps to generate glutathione, a potent antioxidant that is present in every cell of the body. NAC is sometimes prescribed by doctors to be nebulized and inhaled to help break down mucous to breathing. Taking NAC orally as a supplement on an ongoing basis can help reduce the risk of acute exacerbations of COPD.

TARTEPHED-PS, our generic version of Tartephedreel from Heel, contains homeopathic ingredients used for conditions of the respiratory tract where there is excessive mucous due to inflammation of the mucosal lining.  Its ingredients act to support the flow of mucous (thereby aiding in detoxification) and to relieve coughs of different natures (e.g., dry or wet). For acute support, a dose can be given every 15 minutes until benefits are observed. Daily use can be of benefit to those who suffer from asthma or COPD.

Now that the air in the Lower Mainland has cleared up, best “medicine” for the lungs may be to go outside for a walk. Getting the heart pumping and the blood flowing to the lungs will help promote healthy lungs.
