Stay Level Headed On That Cruise

Many of us suffer from nausea, headache, vomiting, and overall malaise when confronted with rocking motions, be it a ride on the BC Ferries, going on a whale-watching expedition in Steveston, taking your boat out to White Rock, enjoying the amusement park rides at the PNE, or taking a road-trip into the Rockies. With the cruise season just around the corner, we have a few tips to minimize motion sickness so your trip will be memorable for all the right reasons. Having Gravol™ (dimenhydrinate), ginger and even Benadryl® (diphenhydramine) help, but read on for some less well-known gems.

"Veeva(TM)" the Peaceful Life

Stress, anxiety and sleep…these types of issues come up every day as we counsel our patients. Many a time, they have been put onto prescription medications because they are so frustrated with their symptoms and ask if there are natural options that can be considered. For as long as we have practiced, there have been options that we have been happy to discuss. Recently, we became aware of a new line of supplements from a Canadian company called, “Veeva™” who produce only three supplements: one each to target stress, anxiety and sleep. They are the only Canadian company to have a product licensed by Health Canada with anxiety listed as an indication.

Improving Digestion with Supplemental Enzymes

No doubt most of us have enjoyed various foods over these past few weeks at Holiday gatherings and chances are, a few of us have experienced some sort of gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort. Although there are possible organic reasons why eating too much or eating “foreign” foods may cause GI issues, undigested food can be the reason behind bloating and gas, cramping, diarrhea or constipation. Improperly digested food can be linked to certain food sensitivities; for example, undigested lactose, the carbohydrate found in milk, causes issues for those who are lactose intolerant, but this can be remedied by taking a lactase (or lactose-digesting enzyme) supplement. Another example is people with Coeliac disease who cannot tolerate gluten, but supplementation with Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV, a gluten-digesting enzyme) can greatly improve their tolerance and reduce symptoms.

Bye Bye Dry Skin

Collagen for Beauty and Brawn

Supplementing with Type II collagen hydrolysate appears to help with joint pain making it an effective adjunct to glucosamine and/or chondroitin when supplementing with the latter two are not providing adequate relief. Collagen Types I and III seem to be more effective for improving the strength of hair, skin and nails.

Recovery(TM), Revisited.

Glucosamine will not work alone to rebuild your joints. This is true of both the hydrochloride and sulphate forms of glucosamine. Adding chondroitin may only slightly increase the benefits. Everyday, we have arthritic clients coming into our pharmacies remarking how they have gone through “giant Costco-sized bottles” of glucosamine/chondroitin products with little or no benefit to their joints. This does not surprise us one bit. Fortunately, Recovery™ has been around for nearly 2 decades, greatly benefiting our human and horse/dog/cat clients at Cloverdale Pharmasave and Pharmasave Steveston Village.

Naturally Beautiful Skin Care from Viva

Beauty comes from within. This is something that we believe in a figurative sense, but also a literal sense. Omega 3’s (especially gamma linolenic acid), pycnogenol, and hyaluronic acid are amongst our favourite oral supplements for supporting healthy skin from within. However, topical products have their place in giving us beautiful glowing skin.

Prevent & Prevail Against the Cold & Flu

Preparing Your Body to Fight the Winter Bugs

With fall and winter just around the corner, now is a good time to get your body prepared to fight the cold and flu bugs that we will inevitably encounter. In addition to making sure you stay well-hydrated (preferably by drinking water) and eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, there are certain supplements that can be considered to help boost and balance our immune systems.
