Q: When I get bitten by mosquitos or fleas…

August 1, 2011

Q: When I get bitten by mosquitos or fleas I develop huge swellings and I am itchy.  What should I do?

Dr. Cheng: Eating garlic makes you sweat “unfriendly” to bugs. We have a natural insect repellent made of Oil of Citronnella and Geranium that you can apply to your exposed parts. There is a homeopathic mixture called “HomeoFlea” that is taken internally to make your body “adapt” to insect bites. “Adapt” would mean that when you get bitten, your body does not react so violently.

This can also be used to treat flea and mosquito insect repellents usually contain DEET which should be avoided in pregnancy and in children. Simple barrier strategy is the only way to go with young children.

Henry Cheng is a medical graduate of the University of London, England and is now Natural Products Consultant at Pharmasave Health Centre Downtown Cloverdale.
